Afterimages was initially conceived of as a book in 2002, with stories about photographs that were never taken. Since 2010 it exists in the form of an audio-table, permanently installed in the Dutch Photomuseum in Rotterdam. Visitors are able to listen to stories written or recorded by various photographers and artists; stories about images the photographers for some reason were not able to make. They describe the scenes seen or imagined and explain why they were unable or unwilling to photograph it.
What happens when an important moment cannot be recorded? How does the perceived image impact our memory? Afterimages is about the ambivalent relationship between the image and the photographer, but also about language, image culture and the absence of images.
