Lino Hellings
Lino Hellings is a co-founder of the legendary theater company Dogtroep, which investigated public space in specific locations, as PAPA does today, though Dogtroep's purpose was not to make news but spectacle theater. As public spaces in western cities began to look more and more alike (the same kinds of commercial streets with the same stores), Hellings left Dogtroep after seventeen years to focus on the new public space of the Internet. In her net projects, she always endeavored to create a hybrid of physical and virtual space. PAPA focuses on the rediscovery of local physical space, from the globalized perspective that the Internet makes possible.
PAPA is an Amsterdam/The Netherlands based research office that investigates questions such as ‘How does the newcomer live in the city?’ and ‘Who cleans the city? together with local correspondents in a wide variety of countries.
For this PAPA has developed a unique way to do fieldwork: joint photo walks with local researchers, professionals and amateurs in any conceivable mix.
PAPA has correspondents in a growing number of world cities on all continents: Dhaka, Bangladesh; Lagos, Nigeria; Sao Paulo, Brazil; Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan; Detroit, USA; Rotterdam, The Netherlands; Ramallah, Palestine.
Lino Hellings is an artist trained as a sociologist. She teaches at the Master of Film in Amsterdam.
